When you purchase a horse you may not be aware of all the additional expenses you will have before you actually get to take the horse out for a spin. Before making the plunge, be sure to price out the various types of tack and make a decision which style of riding you want to do and what type of tack is best. If you are on a budget or don't want to buy new tack right off the bat, a good option is to go to horse shows or even farm sales and buy used tack that has been well cared for and maintained. Another option is to buy locally from a tack or feed store, this option usually allows you to return tack that doesn't fit, but be sure to check the stores policy. If you know what you want, what size you...

How to Clean a Horse Saddle

5 stars of 5, 679 votes

If you own your own saddle, it is very important to keep it clean. This is what keeps the leather in good condition and maximizes the longevity of your saddle. A saddle should be lightly cleaned at least once a week, and thoroughly cleaned at least once a month. The more often you ride, the more often you should clean it. Even if you have not been riding, a saddle in storage benefits from a once-monthly cleaning and oiling. If well cared for a saddle can last 50 or more years. If left alone, it will become damaged and will quickly lose value. To begin, you will need a small bucket of warm water, a bar of saddle soap, a jug of saddle oil or conditioner, and two sponges. You may find a soft...

For many beginning riders, just sitting on a horse and staying on seems enough. But as you progress, it becomes more important to have a correct, balanced seat as you ride. A balanced seat not only allows the rider to stay on the horse, it also allows the horse to travel forward in a more balanced way. If you are riding for performance purposes it is essential to offer your horse every opportunity to be balanced as he works. No matter your discipline, the basics for balance remain the same. A balanced seat has even weight on both seat bones with the center of balance directly over the stirrup. Most riders start out with what is called a "chair seat". When you sit on a chair, you sit with your bottom...

Nutrients to Improve Your Horse's Mane

As serious horse owners and ring competitors, we devote a great deal of time to making our horse's mane as gorgeous as possible. Now, many people might consider this obsession with manes to be frivolous. But we (my family and I) are completely serious about it. In our experience, having a horse with a long, thick, flowing mane will win the prize over a horse that may technically be more in line with standards, but that has an unremarkable mane. Good basic grooming is important to bringing out the best of your horse's mane. It need not stop there, though, and in my opinion should not stop there. Take the subject of nutrition. Did you know that you can often dramatically increase the appearance of a...

Have you ever tried to get your horse to enter somewhere like through a gate or into a trailer only to have him rear as he approaches? Rearing is a symptom of the problem we would have to deal with. The horse is clearly showing fear and resistance as well as disrespect for the handler's direction. In order to stop horse rearing, groundwork would have to be done away from the spooky object. We want to learn the horse to move his feet forward and not up when he feels that his life is being threatened. In order to stop horse rearing try the following method: when the horse rears, don't go pulling down on...

Acupuncture is an ancient healing art originated by the Chinese. It has gained a wide range of users through the years to prevent diseases, to cure ailments and to maintain good health. But is acupuncture only for humans? Acupuncture for animals is being practiced by an increasing number of veterinarians. They use it to treat different diseases and disorders of animals. It was used initially on horses then later on, it was tried on other farm animals. Now it is also being used on cats, dogs and birds. Veterinary acupuncture is very much similar to that of humans because they are both based on the premise that energy (called qi) flows in the body through channels called meridians. Equestrian sport is a fascinating subject. However, these days I have to indulge my passion in front of the television, because my mare is "indisposed". After three years of trying, getting more desperate with every passing year, my gorgeous pure-bred Friesian mare has finally managed to get herself pregnant. At the grand old age of eight, she is expecting her first foal in the spring. Of course, insemination by one of the breath-taking registered Friesian stallions was just not good enough for her. She had to fall for an unregistered pure-bred stud, probably because he was on-hand and available. Never mind, she is in foal at last, and had lots of fun getting there. Somewhere along the line (it may...

What is a Warmblood?

5 stars of 5, 615 votes

No matter where you look, you will see them advertised: Warmblood horses for sale. But what exactly is a Warmblood and what makes them different from the other breeds? There are two different definitions for the term. One is commonly referred to as Warmbloods, while the other is not capitalized: warmbloods. Technically a warmblood is any horse that is a crossbred between a "cold blood", such as a draft horse, and a "hot blood", such as a Thoroughbred. Many people who crossbreed drafts with Thoroughbreds will call their offspring warmbloods. While this upsets many Warmblood breeders, they are technically correct. The thing is, most draft crosses are not of the same quality and type as a...

The American Warmblood, like many of the European Warmbloods, is generally thought to be any horse that fits into the warmblood type that is used primarily for jumping or dressage competition. It originated in the United States, and an American Warmblood must have been born in the United States, Canada, or Mexico to be registered in the American Warmblood Registry. It has also been called the Sport Horse, the American Warmblood Sporthorse, or simply Warmblood. American Warmbloods often excel in dressage, show jumping and eventing, which is what they are being bred for. The American Warmblood is a result of breeding hot-blooded horses (Thoroughbreds) with cold-blooded horses (drafts) to produce an...

The simple act of setting up a horse blog in cyberspace, even if it is on a fascinating subject like equestrian holidays, will not guarantee you visitors who click on your adsense ads or buy your e-book. When you have told all your horse fiends and acquaintances as well as your grandmother about your blog or e-book, time has come to take it to the masses of eager readers...

Warmbloods have gained enormous popularity in the past few years. More and more of these horses are being seen in competition, especially in Grand Prix and Olympic quality competition. This type of horse is often referred to under the broad term of "warmblood," but there are actually several breeds of Warmbloods and each offer their own bit of edge in competition The Hanoverian is one of the most prominent riding horses in the world. The breed was originally the inspiration of King George II of England, whom was also the ruler of Hanover at this time. He directed the Celle Stud of Lower Saxony in 1735 to produce a coach horse that could also be used for agriculture. And thus, the Hanoverian was...

One such example is the job of a farmer and all of the different equipment they need to stay on top of their business. If you have an agricultural or produce farm that grows food and vegetables, a different type of a fence Plano TX may be needed to keep the crops separate from one another. The Warmblood has a long, deep, and noble heritage for a horse which is neither a specific breed or of particular lines. The Warmblood is exemplary of any number of predominantly European sport horses who are medium in stature. This is not the prerequisite for the registry of the horse, but more a guideline as to the types of horses that you will meet at the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky. There are very few closed registry breeds who fit into the Warmblood category, and these are more ancient and pure bloodlines which have been preserved and perfected, much like those of the thoroughbred. The hotblooded horse, for starters, is a horse that is considerably more spirited and...

Dressage has long been seen as the most graceful of equestrian events and for good reason. The FEI dressage horses that compete at this level are trained to move gracefully across the arena performing complex maneuvers while the rider appears to give no cues and interferes very little in the actions of the horse. The FEI rules describe dressage as "the development of the horse into a happy athlete through harmonious education. As a result, it makes the horse calm, supple, loose and flexible, but also confident, attentive and keen, thus achieving perfect understanding with his rider." There is a vast difference between a Certified Equine Appraisal and an opinion offered by an experienced trainer or breeder about the value of a horse. When I get a call to appraise a horse I try to determine what specific problem the client hopes to solve and offer the best option to meet their need. In many cases a certified appraisal is overkill. When an appraisal is required, clients frequently misunderstand how the appraisal process works. Appraisals can be quite costly so it is beneficial to horse owners to understand when an appraisal is the right decision and when it is not. Most appraisals are made of two types of property, real and personal. Houses and land are real property. Anyone who...

While reading Gabriele Rachen and Klaus Schoneich's book Straightening The Crooked Horse I am once again reminded of the harm that can be done on a horse by pushing it too hard too fast mentally or physically. We are teaching the horse concepts that it will use to interact with humans for the rest of its life, so why the hurry? Many disciplines have become too focused on how soon a horse can start competing so it can earn money and points. Some of these same horses break down and are no longer competing before the prime of their life. This is where the Western and Eastern philosophies collide. A good dressage trainer will take as many years as the horse needs to prepare it for competition. It is not...

The Dutch Warmblood has made quite a name for himself over the past 15 years, and there are many very good reasons for this. Firstly, it is important to note that there are two very distinct types of Dutch Warmblood bred there today, one for dressage and one for show jumping, while the North American Dutch Warmblood Registry has line breeding ideas of its own for the hunting ring. One thing that remains true to form, however, is that there is a temperament and build of this breed for nearly every advanced equine sporting circuit in action today. The only realm that he has not been pushed toward so far is eventing, but we aren't counting him out of the running just yet. Over the past six years alone...

What do you look for in a horse? Is it Breed? Is it color? Is it size? Is it conformation? How about the hooves? The old saying "No hoof - no horse" is undeniably true. You can't saddle up and ride a horse with sore feet. Until recently, I didn't think much about hooves as being a primary determinant for selecting a horse. You just keep the horse shod with new shoes every six to eight weeks and pick whatever breed, color, size, or conformation you want. Just feed-em, shoe-em, saddle up and ride. Then, I started noticing my five-year-old Morgan horse (Captain Morgan). Captain's hooves must be as hard as steel. We live in an area with rocky soil. Rocks protrude through the surface of the ground at...
